Winter Tea Tonic to Support Health and Well-being

Winter Tea Tonic

Striving for better health takes time and often requires taking into account all factors that impact our health. Unfortunately, some of these factors can be out of our control, but many are easily within our grasp. These are the factors that an individual should focus on and mostly encompass areas within nutrition and lifestyle. As of late our focus has been on nutrition, specifically medicinal herbs and plants that one can grow in New England or readily find at a grocery store and we would like to share one of our favorite winter tea tonics with you.

“Witch’s Brew”

In our house we refer to custom teas as “Witch’s Brew” and our “house brew” regularly changes with the seasons and our family needs. Lately, the primary ingredient has been ginger root. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) ginger root is used to strengthen the immune system (referred to as Wei Qi), prevent the onset of colds and boost energy.

Other commonly used ingredients for our winter tea tonic are selected to support our overall health and well being during the winter months. Such ingredients include, cinnamon, astragalus, elderberry, echinacea, mint(s), licorice root, anise hyssop, chaga, reishi, chamomile, chilis (birds eye), black pepper, hibiscus, citrus peel and the list could go on...Lately our recipe has been looking alot like this:

Recipe

1) Ginger root 1 large piece approx length of pointer finger and width of 2 fingers- roughly chopped

2) 1 oz of astragalus (approximately 3 large pieces dried)

3) 2 cinnamon sticks

4) 1 anise star

5) 3 tablespoons of licorice root

6) 2-3 birds eye chilis (dried)

Place ingredients in a pot fill with approximately 60 ounces of water bring to a boil and then simmer for 20 minutes

Once the tea has finished simmering we've been adding 1 scoop of reishi and 1 scoop of chaga powder (we use OM mushrooms) to each of our cups.

Did you know? We organic tea that has been carefully selected based on the season.

If you're not much for whipping up your own herbal remedies and are looking for something to streamline the process we carry a variety of teas that are designed to support health and well-being. As always, we are happy to be a resource and share our knowledge to assist you on your path to wellness.
