With the 4th of July behind us, your probably feeling sick of potato salad, grilled chicken, and corn on the cob. However, the height of cookout season is still among us, and North Shore Acupuncture and Natural Medicine wants to provide some tips on how to eat a heart healthy summer "diet".
Heart Healthy Foods are Important to Include in your Daily Diet!
While ice cream, beef brisket and iced tea are iconic summer foods, it is very important to not "over do it" with these foods. As too much refined or fatty foods are a risk factor to develop diseases such as, high blood pressure and diabetes.
On the other hand, heart healthy foods, such as olive oil, fruits and vegetables are extremely important to include in your daily diet as they help reduce your risk for cardiovascular disease, stroke, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. High blood pressure can occur in anyone, including children. In the United States, 1 in 3 adults suffer from high blood pressure, which greatly increases the risk for development of cardiovascular disease and stroke.

Salmon - Wild-caught or responsibly farmed, is a heart healthy choice that is great for grilling. Full of Omega 3's, which are anti-inflammatory! Omega 3's reduce your risk for cardiovascular disease, inhibit plaque growth and reduce triglycerides.
Tomatoes - Excellent on salads or cut in half, brush with garlic infused olive oil and grill cutside down, Finish with pepper and sliced basil. Yummmm!
Fresh fruit - Nature's candy. Full of anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals. Fresh fruit help lower blood pressure and provides water which keeps you hydrated during the summer heat.
Summer squash - Grows like a weed in a summer garden and It's a nutritional powerhouse. Full of vitamins, A, B6, C, you name it, it has it. Slice and toss on some olive oil and grill! Yum!
