Acupuncture for Tinnitus

Tinnitus is a common issue that affects approximately 15-20 percent of the adult population. People with tinnitus experience a noise or ringing in the ears. People with tinnitus describe the ringing in the ears as a phantom noise. The phantom noise manifests differently in each person and possible sound descriptions include:

  • Ringing

  • Buzzing

  • Clicking

  • Humming

  • Static

  • Chirping (to name a few)

The phantom noise may vary in pitch from a low hum to a high pitched buzz or ring. Additionally, the noise may be intermittent or be present all the time. Although tinnitus may be bothersome, typically the common causes of tinnitus are not life threatening. Tinnitus is typically a sign of age-related hearing loss, ear injury or a circulatory disorder.

Pulsatile vs. Non-Pulsatile tinnitus

Pulsatile tinnitus is a rhythmical noise that beats at the same rate as the heart. The sound is the blood circulating through the body, and can be confirmed by feeling their pulse and listening for the high pitched noise.

  • Non-Pulsatile tinnitus is presented in approximately 90 percent of people with tinnitus. The most common causes are: Hearing loss that occurs with aging, living or working around loud noises.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), is a restorative medicine. This means when you receive acupuncture, your whole body benefits. According to TCM, your health and wellness depends on the flow of Qi (blood flow). When Qi is blocked, your body is out of balance and disease manifests. When Qi is flowing freely, your body is in balance and is able to naturally heal itself. During an acupuncture treatment, an acupuncturist stimulates various acupuncture points to clear blockages and allow for flow restoration.

Acupuncture - Natural Treatment for Tinnitus

A recent study, demonstrated that acupuncture works to effectively reduce the loudness and severity of tinnitus and can be useful for treatment of non-pulsatile chronic tinnitus. The patients within this study found that acupuncture made the tinnitus sound quiet and less severe, improving their quality of life.

Acupuncture for Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) Conditions

According to TCM and acupuncture theory, the sensory organs are connected to the internal organs, and because the sensory organs are susceptible to external factors such as hot, cold and wind, they can easily succumb to illness and disease. The combination of acupuncture and Chinese herbs in the treatment of ENT disorders look at treating the body as a whole, rather than just the signs and symptoms that manifest. This allows acupuncture to get to the root of the issues that negatively impact your health and wellness. Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years in the treatment of issues that cause inflammation, pain, depression, and many other disorders.
